Broom

Is there a way to switch from stand alone to menu bar monitoring?

There are  two modes Broom supports:  - Menubar mode: Broom sits quietly in your menubar. One click on the Broom icon shows you how much space you've got left on your hard drive. Broom This mac button brings you up the  main window - Broom also has a standalone mode if, you wouldn't like to run it in the background, just occasionally. That only shows the main window, and you have preferences in the menubar To switch form Standalone to Menubar you'll need to click Broom menu (upper left corner besides the ) then preferences, then "Switch now". To switch back, you'll need to click on the Broom icon in the menubar (top right) then settings, then  "Remove from menubar".

Broom is showing an incorrect disk space free and %, why is that?

It is probably the issue of Local Snapshots.Read more about it in FreeSpace Tab section
"I notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. Why is that?"

Please help me to have the monitoring features enabled as seen on the screenshots!

You need to switch Broom to menubar mode. To learn how, please read the answer to the "Is there a way to switch from stand alone to menu bar monitoring?" question.

Whenever I open Broom, it always shows “places”. I’d like to turn monitoring back, how can I do that?

Places is the default tab of the Standalone mode. If you prefer menubar mode please read the answer to the "Is there a way to switch from stand alone to menu bar monitoring?" question.

I do not want to cause any problems by removing something important. Can you warn me of any potential problems?

We've experienced some unexpected behavior by deleting the Caches folder, because some programs are using it more intense then others, so only delete that folder when you have no unsaved data in your running programs and the folder is really big. The logs folder can be the same, but we haven't experienced anything bad with that. Downloads and Trash is totally safe to delete, but make sure you have nothing important in it that you might miss in the future :)

I downloaded and installed an application. Can Broom delete the app from my system completely?

Broom only deletes files permanently from certain folders by using the Places Tab. Your downloaded application was probably installed in your Applications folder, so you don't need the installer file anymore in your Downloads folder. Broom will remove only that file permanently, but not the installed app itself..

Can you please tell me what it means to “Broom this Mac”?

It is a game with words. It originates from "About This Mac", what you can see when you click on the apple menu.We needed a name for a button that activates the main window of Broom. Then "Broom this Mac" was born.

Broom has frozen and it does not show in force quit as running. How can I quit Broom?

Probably Broom was running in menubar mode, and the force quit is only for regular mode apps. There is still a way you can force quit a menubar application explained in the "General questions" section under "How do I force quit a menubar app?".

Wake Up Light

Love the alarm, with one caveat. Is there a way to have total black at night?

There are several options you have to save you from covering the monitor with a pillow :) 1. the best is to use our helper to sleep your mac. Please read the Helper section of the apps Help to find out more. 2. you can turn the brightness down to zero. (don't worry when the time comes, the sunrise effect will turn it back on). 3. you can also use System Preferences / Energy Saver window to set your Display Sleep time

I am wondering if there is anyway to listen to a song on my iTunes while I sleep but still have the alarm set?

You are be able to keep on listening to your music after pressing the sleep button (but only if you don't use the helper). In a version planed soon there will be a sleep timer, to handle the issue perfectly.

I just got this app, it would be nice if I was able to add my own mp3 sounds. Is that likely to be a feature ?

Yes, it is definitely a feature that will be implemented in an upcoming version not so far in the future. Please stay tuned with the updates!

Does Wake Up light also adjust the physical brightness of the screen? Or is just the image changing from black to yellow?

Wake Up Light automatically turns the brightness of your screen to 100% during the sunrise. The sunrise effect does much more than just changing from from back to yellow :)

Why does the brightness turn down during the sunrise?

Your automatic brightness adjustment is turned on. You can turn it off at System Settings > Displays > Automatically adjust brightness.

How can I install / remove the Helper Application?

Please check out the related section of Wake Up Lights page

When I wake the computer, it requires my password and then I see your app running in a small window on the desktop :(

Unfortunately there is no way for Wake Up Light to work properly together with password login. When the helper is installed and your Mac is waken up by our app  from sleep at the required time, it will always force to enter the password. That will ruin the full screen mode of our app. For security reasons there is no way to bypass this mechanism, except if you turn off password login manually.

I have tried a couple of times to set the alarm, but it never comes on. What shall I do?

In general we usually suggests to go step by step. First set the alarm five minutes ahead of the recent time. Make sure you pay attention for the day setting. If you press sleep then it will be already sunrise on your full screen, and at the time of alarm, the sound will turn on. This is how the app supposed to work. Then set it for one hour, and if it still works you can surely set it to your morning time.

What are the upcoming features in the future version updates?

New features coming soon, stay tuned by checking the Updates tab in the Mac App Store:
  • -multiple alarms
  • -sleep timer and sleep button customization
  • -menubar mode

FreeMemory

If I buy the “Extras” for the non-Pro version, is it then functionally identical to FreeMemory Pro?

Yes it is. The only difference is that FreeMemory Pro is a “solo app” without in-app purchase, so it can be purchased for OS X 10.6 as well. (The in app purchase for Extras in FreeMemory is unfortunately only working for OS X Lion (it is Apples restriction), so there is no way to purchase the Extras on non Lion OS X.)

When the app works my machine almost stops working until the program is finished, why is that happening?

There is no ultimate advise and answer that we can give as this is behaviour of FreeMemory is very environment specific, depends on your hardware, and what type of apps you run, and even how you run them.
The best advise we can give it to play around with the settings and check out some other answers in this FAQ for questions like: "I want to know what is the best warning level & refresh rate I should use." and "Why is my available RAM so low, even when most programs are closed?".

Why is it only releases a gig or two of RAM even though I have 16GB inactive?

Running the app in 32-bit mode will only let you free up 2GB of inactive memory. Please make sure you run the app in 64-bit mode by unchecking "Open in 32-bit mode".
FreeMemory32

What is the differences among the given three algorithms in version 1.8?

Technically they do the same thing but with a slightly different implementation. We've decided to add this feature as some of our users were complaining about not being able to restore the older algorithms in the new versions.
The best way to find out which fits best to you is just giving them a try.

I’ve installed FreeMemory from App Store but I can’t find it and/or unable to run/use it. What is wrong?

FreeMemory is a menubar app, so it only shows up in the menubar, nowhere else, that is the only place you can open it, by clicking on it. Please check your menubar (upper right corner) and if you still can't see anything we can suggest you is to reinstall the app, because the App Store downloads can go wrong sometimes. Read about reinstalling apps in the "General questions and answers" section below. There is one more thing you have to check out: isn't your menubar too "crowded"? If there is no space for our app in your menubar, then it won't be able to show up. In this case please close something that takes up the space.

I’ve reinstalled the app and the Extras are gone, do I have to buy them again?

Don't worry :) The purchased Extras are not gone, you only have to buy it once in a lifetime.  All you need to do is to reactivate it again, which basically synchronizes your local purchases with App Store. It is very easy. Just click on Settings / Extras and then push the Reactivate button on the FreeMemory Extras window.

I’ve downloaded FreeMemory and I would like to buy the Extras, but the purchase doesn’t work. What can I do?

The Extras for FreeMemory can only be purchased on OS X Lion as an in-app purchase. Sometimes the AppStore behaves strange with in-app purchases. Please try the purchase several times if it is not working, and don't worry Apple will only charge you one. If you don't have Lion we recommend you to download FreeMemory Pro as it has exactly the same functions (we've mostly implemented that app for this reason). Read more on FreeMemory page

Why does FreeMemory have two icons in the dock?

You probably have two instances of the app. The best you can do is to Ctr+ click on the app icons in the dock, select Options/Show in Finder. Then just delete the one that is in the less prefered location. Then Empry your Trash.
The other thing that might help is to remove FreeMemory from your Login Items in system preferences and use the open at login option within the app.

Why do the Extras need to be reactivated every time after going through an update and restarting the app?

Unfortunately technically it is not possible to implement an automatic reactivation for the in-app purchases. Please press the Reactivate button in the app purchase window every time after updates. It won't charge you again! Sometimes the app store behaves strange so please don't hesitate to press it more than once if it doesn't work for your first time.

Why didn’t smart auto-free automatically free up memory, when my system got well below the threshold of warning?

We call this function smart, because it only works when it's possible in your system to free up memory, so it won't damage anything in your memory handling. Please keep on checking the menubar, and you'll see when the magic happens :)

I don’t understand the types of memory under Usage Details. Can you explain?

You can read more about the types of memory in the article by Apple: Reading system memory

I want to know what is the best warning level & refresh rate I should use.

If you set the refresh rate to a bigger value it will result less CPU usage, but the monitored value will become less accurate. If your using CPU intense apps on your Mac you should set it to the highest value.
The good value of the Warning level depends on how much memory you have in total and what type of apps you use and it can vary a lot. The best way to set it to a good value is to find a value when it turns red BEFORE your Mac slows down (because of memory intense app usage).

Can you add warning level for inactive memory that trigs “Smart Auto Free”?

The "Smart" part of the algorithm is that it does check your inactive memory as well. It only frees up memory if you have a lot of inactive. High amount of Inactive memory is only "bad" if you have no Free Memory besides. Hope this explains that "Smart Auto Free" mode is good enough as it is in FreeMemory.

Why is the app showing as total memory 3GB (under usage details) when I have 4GB installed in my macbook pro?

You're probably facing an issue that is related to Ram Limitation. You can google on the topic, but this is maybe the most simple article: Inside the MacBook Pro’s 3GB RAM limitation, more detailed here: Understanding Intel Mac RAM

Do I need to keep the free version of FreeMemory after purchasing FreeMemory Pro?

No, it can be uninstalled. Read more about uninstalling apps in the "General questions and answers" section below.

I keep thinking whether FreeMemory is going to close programs that are running in the background.

For sure it will not close any programs no matter how they are used.

Why is my available RAM so low, even when most programs are closed?

By default without the Extras/Pro FreeMemory is showing you the amount of your free memory in the menubar, which is not the same as your available memory. For example you also have Inactive Memory, that is also available. Read more about memory types here.

You can check the other memory usage types under usage details, or in the Extras / Pro you can select from a lot more options what to see in the menubar. Read more about the extras here.

You don't have to worry about low values in the menubar and you don't need to push the Free memory option whenever your free memory is low (OS X handles normal memory management issues well). "So why is Free Memory app good for me then?" - you might ask. The click on "Free Memory" menu becomes very useful in various use cases when you know more about how you'll use your apps, so OS X can't guess better than you.

One example: You're done using a big memory consumer app (like Safari or Mail) and you are planning to run something else (a game for example). You check on the menubar and it shows you have not much free memory left. The inactive memory left behind by the app you've closed will be freed up with a click on Free Memory for the new app. (otherwise the inactive memory is just waiting for the closed app to open again faster).

What is the benefit of using your algorithm over the purge command option in the Extras?

In a nutshell, our algorithm is a bit "smoother" than purge, meaning in practice that it won't hang your processes while doing the clean up.

An app very much the same to FreeMemory has surfaced on the Mac App Store. Do you know about Memory Free 2?

We know about Memory Free 2 app .The similar names were a strange coincidence by the time we launched our app. No piracy issues related to them in the icon as it is a free icon that can be used without copyrights.

I have a brand new Macbook air with 4GB Ram. Currently reading only 12MB available RAM. Why is that?

See the answer for "Why is my available RAM so low, even when most programs are closed?"

Why do you “spam me”, when the app starts up?

FreeMemory does contain a "one time alert", promoting our other apps since the beginnings. Our feedbacks were mostly positive about it. As we put a lot of effort in making our apps the best we can, if a user likes one of them, he/she is usually happy to know about an other.
The alert will never ever show up in your app again.
If you see the alert during your login process, it means you have updated the app, and did a restart while the "Open at login" option is checked. The alert will never show up again during your startup either.

FreeSpace Tab

FreeSpace Tab is telling me I have 28.5GB free when the “get info” on my HD says 39GB. Why is that?

The most possible explanation for your scenario form Apple: "Starting from 10.7, local snapshot is switched on by default by Apple. Which means, Some space would have already taken as local backup hidden from the user. ". Read more in the next answer.

I notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. Why is that?

Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots. The reason for this is that local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed. FreeSpace Tab displays the available space with accounting for the local snapshots. This is the real free space you have without disturbing your local backups. When your disk is close to full, OSX will reclaim the space from your backup automatically.
Read more about the issue at Apple Support site

There is a drive that I can’t eject with FreeSpace Tab, am I doing something wrong?

Unfortunately there are some special scenarios when FreeSpace Tab can't unmount drives. It could be because it is not allowed to be unmounted by the OS for our app.

I was wondering what the lock next to the drives I have mean or does?

If the lock is clicked for a volume it will be excluded from "Eject all".

Just one little question what is or what does “Broom this Mac” mean and do?

"Broom this mac" is a link to our other app called Broom. It is very useful if you're running low on disk space on any of your volumes, so that's how it is related to FreeSpace Tab. You can have a detailed look at the app at Brooms page.

Wake Up Time

Why do Extra Sounds need to be reactivated every time after going through an update?

Unfortunately technically it is not possible to implement an automatic reactivation for the in-app purchases. Please press the Reactivate button in the app purchase window every time after updates. It won't charge you again! Sometimes the app store behaves strange so please don't hesitate to press it more than once if it doesn't work for your first time.

What are the upcoming features in the future version updates?

New features coming soon, stay tuned by checking the Updates tab in the Mac App Store:
  • -multiple alarms
  • -sleep timer and sleep button customization
  • -menubar mode

Is there a way to sleep my mac until the alarm?

YES! Use our helper, a small application that enables you to sleep and wake your Mac easily from Wake Up Time by pressing the Sleep button. You can save energy by putting your Mac to sleep instead of only turning the screen off. When your Mac is in sleep, it’s turned on but consumes much less power. Find out more on our Wake Up Time page.

How can I be sure your helper program isn’t malicious? Why isn’t the helper included, or available through the app store?

Waking up the computer from sleep requires administrator privileges. According to the App Store rules, apps that require root privileges are rejected, so we had to create an "outside App Store" helper application to provide this kind of functionality. It's 100% malware/virus free. There's also an uninstaller on our site.

I’m a Snow Leopard user, how can I enable Extra Sounds in Wake Up Time?

The in app purchase for Extra Sounds in Wake Up Time is unfortunately only working for OS X Lion (it is Apples restriction), so there is no way to purchase the Extra Sounds on non Lion OS X. We’ve launched Wake Up Time Pro, with all the functionalities that are implemented in the Extra Sounds. As it is a “solo app” without in-app purchase, it can be purchased for OS X 10.6 as well. This is how we could find a way to please the users who were asking about the Extras, but have no Lion. Wake Up Time Pro is available on the Mac App Store.

How do I setup AM / PM ?

For the display: use 24-hour checkbox in the Preferences.
For alarm time setting: the app follows your System settings. You can customize that in Times settings in Language & Texts in System Preferences.

The AM/PM is disproportionately large and is mostly off screen, what’s wrong?

It looks like you have a missing font. We are using system fonts (bundled with os x) to display those labels. You can download the missing fonts from here:
http://www.fontpark.net/en/font/futura-medium/
http://www.fontpark.net/en/font/futura-condensedmedium/

I set the alarm for 6am “tomorrow”, but next day it doesn’t change to today before the alarm time. Why is that?

It is caused by a known bug. It is important to know that it's only a display issue, it doesn't affect the functionality. It means the app WILL WAKE YOU UP at the alarm time.
The fix will be available with the next version so stay tuned with the updates. Thanks for your patience!

Twins

What happened to Twins on the Mac App Store?

Twins 1.4 has been unexpectedly pulled out from the Mac App Store (MAS) so we've released a MAS independent version of the app. The latest available version of Twins was 1.3 on the MAS. Version 1.4 has tons of important improvements, but it has never been available due to the MAS removal of Twins.

Even until today we haven't received an acceptable reason from Apple for the removal of Twins and the exact conditions of returning the app. We've been promised several times that Twins will be returned to sale, but it has never happened.

To start using version 1.4 of Twins you need to download the demo version of the app
- if you still have the binary of Twins MAS version 1.3 you only need to migrate your purchase by following the steps under Purchase / Unlock Twins menu
- if you only have the proof of your purchase then please email it directly to support[at]rockysandstudio[dot]com
- if you can't prove your purchase, but you would like to use Twins again, you are able to purchase it directly from our store.

Download and try

In case if you have any further question related to Twins 1.4, please contact us by using our support form.

Is the application really checking bit-by-bit to find out whether the duplicates are really duplicates?

See the answer above at the "Does Twins only find duplicates based on file size, file name?" question

Will it find iTunes duplicates? What can I do with them?

To remove duplicates in iTunes the best way is to use its "built-in duplicate finder". Click File/Display Duplicates in iTunes and then delete the once you don't need.

Besides it is possible to delete files within your iTunes Library, but we'd like to warn you that it could harm the consistency of iTunes. Therefore we're trying to protect users from doing that with warning messages, and not allow it by default.
If you just drop in your iTunes folder in the Startup window (or press + and select it). You'll then see then all the duplicates, but you'll get a warning message every time you try to select them (therefore automatic selection won't select it as well).
As a workaround for users who really know what they do we have an option in Preferences called "Disable item selection warnings". That will help you out, but use it very carefully (it still won't work with auto select).

What are the upcoming features I can expect to see?

• Folder based selection tool (the most requested missing feature :)

• Ignore list for automatic selection (you'll really love that)

Does Twins only find duplicates based on file size, file name?

No, absolutely not. Twins uses the SHA1 checksum, so only files with the same checksum are duplicates. "SHA-1 is essentially a secure checksum for a data file. The SHA-1 checksum is based on a cryptographic standard. For a given file, SHA-1 produces a 160 bit encrypted output known as a "message digest." It is highly improbable that a modified data set would produce the same message digest. If a file is changed during transit, its message digest also changes." - read more
If the "check larger files in the background" option is checked in the Preferences, then some files might show up as duplicates during the background check, but you'll be warned that they are not exact duplicates. Please always check the preview as a visual feedback before selecting a file for moving to trash.

Does Twins scan subfolders? Sometimes I want to scan subfolders and other times not depending on what folders I’m scanning.

Twins recursively checks for every file in a folder you add to the scan. This means it does look in every subfolder of the folder for duplicates, no need to drag every nested folder. If you need to exclude a specific folder from the scan you can add that in Preferences.

I get an error that says “Twins was unable to permanently delete some files…”. Why is that? What can I do?

You are trying to delete files that are not allowed to be deleted by the OS for some reasons that we don't know. If you reveal those files in Finder (double click on them in Twins) and try to move them to the Trash manually you probably won't be able to. From finder if you click on "Get Info" you'll see more about the permissions of the files and you can also check out whether it is locked or not.

Can I remove duplicates from iPhoto or Aperture library?

1. Open Twins/Preferences and set the Algorithm slider to Pro
2. Drop your iPhoto Library / Aperture Library to the circle on the Startup Window (Only drag and drop will work. For example open a Finder window and locate "iPhoto Library" probably in your home/Pictures folder. Drag and drop the file into the circle with the arrow)
3. Voilà! Check out the duplicates in your iPhoto / Aperture.

The removal of such files are not supported by Twins as iPhoto and Aperture Library is supposed to be a "closed ecosystem". This means there is no way in Twins to autoselect the files, and we suggest you to reveal those files in your finder, and figure out why are they duplicated, and remove them from iPhoto / Aperture.

Can your app find and remove duplicate folders?

Recently Twins only finds duplicated files. The good news is that the issue of handling and selecting duplicated folders is on the very top of our todo list. It will show up in a version coming in the future so please stay tuned with the updates and by following us on Twitter. Thanks for your patience!

Is it possible to search the “whole Mac”?

We can help you out with telling you what to do if you have the default names on your Mac. Just Add or Drop "Macintosh HD" from the left side of Finder under Favorites.

There are X GB of duplicates, but auto-select says: “There’s nothing to select”. Why?

Auto-select selects every item of the listed duplicate groups that can be manually selected without a warning message. In this case you do have many duplicates, but none of them can be selected without a warning message. Please select the duplicates manually and read the warning to know more about your issue. We'd also recommend you to read the other FAQ-s related to iPhoto/iTunes/Aperture as those are the most frequent reasons for this situation.

I’ve disabled selection warnings, but auto select still doesn’t work on all files. Why is that?

By disabling the warnings you can still only select manually the items without a warning message. Auto-selection still won't select the items, that originally have warning messages.
The reason why we don't allow disabled warning messages and auto-selection work together for the users is because it would be too easy to automatically delete valuable data, that might harm the consistency of your apps and their datasets.
Note: To remove duplicates in iTunes the best way is to use its "built-in duplicate finder". Click File/Display Duplicates in iTunes and then delete the once you don't need.

Is there a 32bit or Snow Leopard Version?

Twins uses certain elements that are only available on OS X Lion (10.7). Maybe in a future version we'll be able to replace those parts and make our app 10.6 and 32bit compatible, please stay tuned by following us on Twitter!

If an image has a resized copy, but still, a copy, does Twins find it as duplicate?

Twins only finds duplicates that are exactly the same (almost bit-by-bit). Read more about it at the "Does Twins only find duplicates based on file size, file name?" question. If you resize an image it definitely "changes its bits", so Twins won't find it as a duplicate.

How can I batch delete duplicate files in iTunes?

It is possible to delete files within your iTunes Library, but we'd like to warn you that it could harm the consistency of iTunes. That will help you out, but use it very carefully.

Twins Mini

What are the differences between Twins and Twins Mini?

Please check out our comparison matrix.

Where are all the other questions and answers for Twins Mini?

Twins Mini is our newest app. Recently we're collecting common questions to add here. Please use the form below to let us know your questions!

Flare Fighter

How come that the icon is always red and what red or black represent?

Red means your Safari is not the active window (so your doing something else then using it), and you have flash content opened in Safari, which is paused by FlareFighter to save your CPU.

I recently purchased FlareFigher and it works great with Safari. Will other browsers be supported?

The requested feature you're asking about is definitely  the first one to implement on our todo list. Technically it's not an easy issue, so we need to work on it, which could take some time. Please stay tuned with the updates in the appstore, where you'll see when the multibrowser support is implemented!

Why is the name so strange, wouldn’t FlashFighter be better?

It would definitely be much better, but FlashFighter was said to be a well known brand during the review process. We had to change the name to be able to put the app in the App Store.

RSS Notifier / Reader Notifier

Google Reader will be disabled in July. What are your plans with Reader Notifier?

We've released the RSS version of Reader Notifier called "RSS Notifier". It is available on the Mac App Store for free.

RSS Notifier allows you to import your recent Google Reader subscriptions and it operates as a "standalone RSS notifier" for your Mac.

Read more at RSS Notifier page.

How can I manually migrate my subscriptions and folders from Google Reader?

1. Head to Google Takeout's Reader page and click the Create Archive button. It'll start building a file with all your feeds, the people you follow, starred items, and more (though most of these won't be importable to other sites).

2. Once it's finished building, click the Download button that appears to get your subscriptions.

3. Open up the ZIP file you just downloaded and go through the folders inside. Inside the Reader folder, you should see a file called subscriptions.xml. Extract that to your desktop.

4. Open Preferences/General and click Open OPML. Choose the subscriptions.xml file you just extracted. All of your feeds and folders will appear.

In Reader Notifier after logging in the first time I have not received a single notification. Why?

Please be patient. The default refresh time is 5 minutes and google reader has also a delay for the feeds.
The other thing you need to know is that unread items in Google Reader are not the same as new items. You can have several “old” unread items, Reader Notifier will only alert you when some new content shows up from your favorite sites and blogs added to your Google Reader.
The best thing to do is just to keep the app running and then you'll see how simply it works if you have "active feeds" in your Google reader :)

Is there a way to make the RSS Links open with an app (i.e. Reeder) instead of the browser?

A new feature for previewing the links in the Notification Center will come with a future update. Stay tuned!
To be able to open Reeder app we need to contact the developer of Reeder, which we might also consider later on.

Leaf

Why do I get “NSXMLParserErrorDomain error…” messages?

Leaf can only display articles from valid RSS feeds. Mostly the reason for this error is that certain pages don't provide valid RSS feeds. Please check the feed with W3C Validator.
You can find the URL of the feed by opening Preferences/Subscriptions and search for feed then press the little gear icon. We recommend you to delete the wrong feeds from your subscriptions.

If you don't mind taking the time, please send us the URL so we can look into the issue. Please note that Google Reader, Feedly and other big aggregators have implemented lot of tricks to "correct" those errors, so invalid feeds might work with their services.

Google Reader will be disabled in July. What are you guys up to? What is “Leaf for Google Reader”?

Please read the related information here: Leaf for Google Reader

How can I manually migrate my subscriptions and folders from Google Reader?

1. Head to Google Takeout's Reader page and click the Create Archive button. It'll start building a file with all your feeds, the people you follow, starred items, and more (though most of these won't be importable to other sites).

2. Once it's finished building, click the Download button that appears to get your subscriptions.

3. Open up the ZIP file you just downloaded and go through the folders inside. Inside the Reader folder, you should see a file called subscriptions.xml. Extract that to your desktop.

4. Click Import OPML in the File menu of Leaf and choose the subscriptions.xml file you just extracted. All of your feeds will appear in your new reader.

Read our other FAQs related to the import of Starred articles and how to fix the errors you might expect after the migration.

Where can I find the Sharing button?

Click on an article to pop up the preview window. Then move your mouse over the bottom of the window to reveal the sharing button. (See below)
LeafSharing

If you don't mind taking your time please drop us a line if you miss a certain sharing service a lot (use the form below).

Will Leaf support cross-platform news reading or multiple devices?

There are several issues we're into to target the issue of multiple device syncing and cross-platform news reading. One thing on our list is to implement iCloud based syncing so you'll be able to use Leaf on multiple Macs. An other is to support the biggest cross-platform news reading services that will rise after Google Reader sunset like like Digg Reader, Feedly, Feedbin, etc. In our future plans we also think about implementing our own iOS app. Stay tuned with the updates and by following us on Twitter.

What happened to “Hide read articles” menu item in version 1.2?

We have replaced the function with a nicer one. You can sort the articles by read status (View menu / Short by Read Status), which will display the unread articles above the read once. After you read an article it will jump to the unread section so it will still stay on your list, but below the rest of the unread articles. (You can also click on the "Read" group name to jump to the top of your read articles group)

Why didn’t my starred articles get imported to the “Leaf RSS Reader” form Google?

We do have plans to add the import of starred articles in the future. Technically it is not an easy issue, so we do need a major interest from our users for the feature to be implemented. Make sure you let us know about your interest (if you haven't already done it:) by using our support form.

How can I disable the article counter badge on the dock icon?

You need to look into the preferences of Notification Center (at System Preferences/Notifications or even by clicking the tiny gear on the bottom right side of Notification Center).
Scroll down to Leaf where you can disable the Badge App icon.

Why is there still a sound when a new article arrives even if I’ve set “Do nothing” at Preferences?

You need to look into the preferences of Notification Center (at System Preferences/Notifications or even by clicking the tiny gear on the bottom right side of Notification Center).
Scroll down to Leaf where you can disable the play sound option of Notification Center.

Is there a way to read articles from a single feed?

Yes it is! Click the search field at the top of the app, then click the magnifying glass. If you select ONLY "Source" from the drop-down list and then start typing the name of the feed, you'll see article only from that feed.

General questions and answers

I’ve just downloaded the application, but it is not responding to anything and behaves very strange. How can I fix it?

We can suggest you is to reinstall the app, because the App Store downloads can go wrong sometimes, and it causes strange behaviors. To find out how, read the answer to the "What is the best way to uninstall / reinstall an app?" question

I’ve purchased your app, but I’m unable to get it to install. I have tried many times with no luck. Can you help?

Very sorry to hear that your App Store download behaves "fuzzy". As it is a problem of the App Store itself there is not much we can do to resolve the issue. What we can suggest you is to try again installing the app and don't worry Apple will only charge you once for the purchase of the same app with the same Apple ID. If the problem is permanent then please contact the Mac App Store Support

Did you intentionally inject ads into your apps?

Our apps might contain "one time alerts", promoting our other apps. Our feedbacks were mostly positive about it. We put a lot of effort in making our apps the best we can, and if a user likes one of them, he/she is usually happy to know about an other.

You can be sure that the alert will never show up in your app again.

What is the best way to uninstall / reinstall an app?

There are several ways to uninstall an app but we recommend you to use one of the below options: 1. the easiest is to open Launchpad, and then drag and drop the icon to the Trash, or press Alt and then click on the little X 2. you can also open the applications folder in a finder (use Go menu / Applications), and then delete or move the app to the Trash. Then just install the app again from the App Store, Apple won’t charge you again. You might need to quit the app before uninstalling it, if that don’t work, you can always force quit (read below)

How do I force quit a menubar app?

You can always force quit any app by using Activity Monitor: 1. start typing Activity monitor in spotlight and then run it. 2. in the top right corner where it says Filter, start typing the apps name, until it is the only one in the list below. 3. click on the name to select it, and press Quit Process (top left big red button). Then choose quit.

The menubar icon doesn’t show up or it keeps disappearing randomly from time to time. Where is it going?

Your menubar is too crowded so if an app with more menu options is in the focus there is no space for our menubar icon. There are some general suggestions you can consider to shorten things in your menubar: - in system preferences / Users & Groups / Login Options select Show fast user switching menu as “Icon” - shorten the Date and time by not displaying some items

Is there any way of getting hold of your Apps without using the App Store?

Our apps are only distributed through the Mac App Store.
Recently as being a small developer studio it is the best way for us to distribute our apps. Besides many other advantages the most important it gives us is the automatism of the updates.

I bought your app and the whirling download graphic ran for a bit, then stopped.  Did it download?

To find out if an app is downloaded properly, you can check out Purchased tab in the App Store application. If the app is there, you can maybe force a reinstall. If it's not there it means you have to download it again. Don't worry Apple will only charge you once. To find out how to reinstall an app, read the answer to the " What is the best way to uninstall / reinstall an app?" question.

When I upgraded your app it closed down and I have now lost it? Where can I find it to relaunch it?

You'll find it in you Applications folder, where you can relaunch it by just a click, hope it will work! You can also use spotlight and start typing the name of it, and you can launch it from there too.

My computer crashed and I lost the software which I’ve purchased from you. How can I get it back?

Don't worry, it is very easy to get your purchased apps back. One thing is sure: Apple will only charge you once for any app. You can check the Purchases tab in the app store, and then install back your apps from there. Or just find the app in the store and click the buy button (you'll be notified that you've already purchased this app)

How can I use my promo code? What is it anyways?

Promotional codes provide free downloads of our application. To redeem a Promo Code on the Mac App Store do the following:
1. Launch the Mac App Store
2. From the Featured or Top Charts tab, look at the right side under “Quick Links” for “Redeem” and click it
3. Enter the promo code
4. Click on “Redeem” to download the app
Often we give away promo codes on Twitter, that are "first come first serve". It means if you get an error message while you're trying to use it, someone else was faster than you.
